When I was asked to blog about weed life for The New Amsterdam Café I was like “Perfect! Weed life, that’s my life” I, like so many other Vancouverites, am a functioning, career driven, family life lovin, pot head! And I’m not ashamed to admit it!
And could there be a better city than Vancouver to really dive into pot culture head first? That’s exactly what I did when I first arrived here in this beautiful city. All the rumours I heard about this place; being from the Yukon, a girl can only dream that a place like this exists! It’s a place where people celebrate marijuana, preach marijuana, smoke, eat, LIVE marijuana! Like a religion, it’s so much a part of their lives. Or they just enjoy a good smoke! Either way, it’s a great place to be a pothead!
My first real ‘cultural’ experience happened on April 20, 2002.
Location: Vancouver Art Gallery! Holy shit! Talk about too much of a good thing. Surrounded by thousands of people, shoulder to shoulder, covered by a ceiling of purple smoke. Puff after puff after puff…… I’m not a novice smoker by any means, but with all the stimulation and a grade of weed you just can’t get in the Yukon, I was ready to pass out. I started spinning. I was trying so hard not to lose my lunch…….I guess I’m not that hard core pothead I thought I was! I remember leaving, but the years after that are pretty hazy!
Thank goodness for the many beaches, friend’s couches, patios, and of course The New Amsterdam Café for providing me with a roomy, more comfortable place to smoke my weed all these years. The 420 celebration turned out to be overrated and overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it’s a great time for a lot of people, but it’s not for this small town girl. However, I do really appreciate the fact that we CAN celebrate this culture freely, that a smoke in public is considered harmless and almost normal. I appreciate that you can go to Rec beach, get your cake and eat it too! I love that you can go downtown and pick your poison from a catalogue. And most importantly I appreciate how great this Twix bar tastes at this present moment.
